Welcome to Money Talks!

Hello! And welcome to Money Talks.

On Monday 24th November 2008 Alistair Darling will announce the Pre Budget Report. He’ll set out his spending plans for the next 6 months, and it’s been called the most important speech of his life. With the economy spiralling into recession and national debt soaring, all eyes will be on the Chancellor’s proposals to boost our wallets.

We’re a group of Broadcast Journalism students at University College Falmouth, and we’ll be doing a couple of special programmes for the speech. We’ll be focusing on how the Pre Budget Report affects a younger audience: how can we make it relevant to 15-25 year olds?

On the day we’ll be doing a radio show before the speech, looking ahead to what’s likely to come up and having a panel of students giving their opinions. Later on we’ll be examining what the Chancellor’s said, how this will affect you, and what it’ll mean in the long term.

On this blog you’ll be able to keep up to date with what we’re doing, what the Chancellor’s said, and what it means for you. You’ll be able to watch us (almost live) in action, and later on you’ll even be able to listen again!

If you’ve got any comments or questions, or any suggestions for what you’d like to see included in our programmes, add a comment below.

a word from the producer….

Today has been a great day. Not simply because the chancellor announced cuts in VAT, extra support for social housing initiatives or an increasing commitment to alleviating the financial situation, but because our team pulled off two great shows. It was always my intention to get everyone doing something a bit creative that we’d never really be able to do in the real world, and as we’re still learning our trade, experiment, regardless of whether what we did went wrong or sounded poor. I’m proud of the fact that, as a team we were brave enough to stick our necks out,  be ambitious in our aims and committed enough to make some outstanding contributions. We’ll all be able to take something new away that we’ve learned from the experience and in getting stuck in and making a few mistakes along the way, we’ll become better broadcasters in the long run. A massive well-done to all the team for your hard work and support. You’re all stars.

Stand-by 10 seconds to go

We finished with 4 seconds left.

The whole group is very happy.. we managed to turn the show around in 10 mins after the Chancellor had finished talking, and so are all very tired as you can imagine.

There were some creative differences between the editor and the rest of the team, but apart from that we are all really happy. Most of our predictions came true, so we will be renaming Jules.. now she is our very own Mystic Meg!!!

Now… down to the pub!!!

Views of our Panel

So what did our guest panel think of the report? Jake Jones and George Whitbread give us a quick summary.

Jake Jones – “It was an experience to remember for my first report, i doubt I’ll watch another one however i feel that more 17 year olds should pay more attention to what’s happening to thier money and thier government.”

George Whitbread – “I feel that it is an interesting topic to look at and i have learnt a lot about how the currtent money issues are being solved.”

First Show/Pre – Budget Build up

First show went well, over ran slightly but great to watch the guys in action.  Just watching the Daily Politics build up, Robert Peston and David Tennant.  One and the same man?

One down, one to go!

A few technical hitches later, but all went smoothly in the end…
So now all we can do is wait for dear ol’ Darling to speak, and we’ll be up and running for the next show!

Fingers crossed!

T minus 20 seconds

The other group are on air now and the tension is starting to rise….

Since the pre-show is almost all recorded, we’re all hoping that Brian will playout without any difficulties…

It’s all quite exciting really! :-)

1st technical glitch of the day!

Crisis: the parrot (mic that connects to a mobile phone so Robbo the Roving Reporter can report live from a location) has decided not to work! How will we overcome this disaster?! Stay tuned…

It’s all good

I have to pay tribute to our lead presenter, it’s rare to see Denis chuckling that much at a script! Well worth the entry fee! Everyone’s working well – I’m confident we’ll do the business as they say
